Dangerous Heat Wave Grips U.S. Southeast and Midwest With Record-Breaking Temperatures

It is always hot in the summer in the US Southeast and even by the standards of Florida and the Carolinas the steamy heat wave that is in store of the region Saturday into the following week is a bit intense. Most of the weekend, the National Weather Service placed heat advisories over a big part of the East Coast, between central Florida and Virginia. Upper 90s F (mid 30s C) high temperatures were projected within a specific area in Florida and the heat indexes were 105 degrees F to 110 degrees F (40.6 C to 43 C). But in Georgia and the Carolinas as far as Virginia the prospects were the same.

Much of eastern North Carolina, reaching Raleigh inland, had extreme heat warnings and part of the corner of South Carolina around Myrtle Beach. Weather forecasters issued dangerous hot weather warnings with temperatures possibly reaching 100 F ( 38 C ) in certain places on Sunday and high heat indices as high as 115 F through the evening on Sunday. The weather service has advised people to drink lots of fluids, remain in an air-conditioned room, avoid going out into the sun, and visit check ups to family members and neighbors. Be particularly take care when outdoors. Wear a light fabric, loose fitting clothes. Avoid strenuous exercises during the day especially in the afternoon. Act in case of heat exhaustion and heat strokes. Stay cool, stay hydrated stay informed.”

The weather service reported that multiple large metropolitan regions in the Southeast which encompass Raleigh and Charlotte in North Carolina, Greenville-Spartanburg in South Carolina, and Atlanta in Georgia will endure extreme risk of heat a number of days without much cool off in the night times. It indicated that more than 30 million would be impaired when it reached the peak of the heat wave on midweek. The Midwest was also in store of a hot humid weekend. There were extreme heat watches issued on eastern Nebraska, western Iowa and southern Minnesota. In Minnesota, the heat indexes were even predicted to go higher at 96 F (36 C) on Saturday and worse at Sunday. And an extreme heat watch had been issued on the St. Louis Missouri region through Tuesday night with highs of about 99 F (37 C) and heat indexes of about 110 F expected Monday and Tuesday. Storms Saturday morning in parts of Iowa poured 2 to 5 inches (5 to 13 centimeters) of rainfall in an isolated area and issued flash flooding warnings.
