US Sanctions Maduro Led Venezuelan Cartel for Ties to Narco Terrorism

On Friday, the United States Treasury added a group in Venezuela, that it says is led by President Nicolas Maduro, to the sanctions list, accusing it of supporting the biggest drug cartels.

The OFAC of the Treasury named limits to what is called as the Cartel of the Suns, designating it as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist organization.
According to the OFAC agency that issues sanctions guided by the US foreign policy, the organization is led by Nicolas Maduro and other senior Venezuelans under the Maduro regime.

It also cited that the cartel supports the Tren de Aragua and the Sinaloa Cartel which are criminal gangs listed as terrorist organizations by the administration of President Donald Trump.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated in a press release that the move today also illuminates the sham Maduro regime as an accomplice in narco-terrorism through criminal terrorist groups such as Cartel de los Soles.

Maduro had been indicted by the Trump first-term administration on murder, drug trafficking and other crimes with a reward posted of his capture on several of the top aides with Trump administration claiming that he was a drug trafficker and a narco terrorist which was refuted by the leftist Venezuelan leader.

In the government of Trump, the objective of the so-called Cartel de los Soles is described as creating the flood of illegal narcotics as an instrument of war against the United States.

Trump has majorly picked on a number of groups situated south of the US border, which he accuses of smuggling huge quantities of dangerous illegal drugs in the United States and have also engaged in extortion, people-smuggling, and other violent crime.

The deterioration of relations between Washington and Caracas is observed during the last years.

The United States objected to the re-election of Maduro as a fraud that was supported by the most of international community in 2019.

Another country, Venezuela, is one of the dozen countries put on a partial ban on travelers announced by Trump this year.

Maduro said on Thursday that the US was lifting a sanction on petroleum giant, Chevron, which had been barred before to operate in the South American nation. Washington is yet to verify the development.
